Abuelo 7 Años Reserva Superior
Abuelo 7 Años Reserva Superior
Objective Notes
Very Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)
Your first pour reveals a nice golden amber color obtained after 7 years of aging in small white oak whiskey barrels.
The aroma is very pleasing to the nose soliciting comparisons to floral sweets, vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar with no off flavors of alcohol. Initial taste is true to the aromas. A medium body slightly complex for its age leads to a pleasantly warm and long finish leaving your desiring another taste.
Anecdotal Notes
RnD first tried Ron Abuelo 7 Años Reserva Superior at Edward Hamilton’s Ministry of Rum Tasting competition in New Orleans this year. It was one of the rums that rated well with us and won a gold medal at the competition. It is presented in a handsome custom manufactured brown glass bottle with a seal on the shoulder and a replication antique label. Foil wraps the neck and top, holding in the cork stopper. A very classy bottle considering the price of this rum!
While in Panama this summer Roger purchased a bottle of Ron Abuelo 7 Años Reserva Superior and included it in his rum tasting aboard the tall ship in the San Blas Islands. It was the well liked and was more comparable to the older 12 year old rums then the younger 3-4 year old Añejo rums. This was the best rum Roger found that was made in Panama.
Taster’s Opinion
Roger - Ron Abuelo 7 Años Reserva Superior is a great rum that is meant to be enjoyed neat or possibly on the rocks. It is too smooth and refined for mixing in cocktails. It’s very reasonably priced and fairly new to the US market. If you can find it do yourself a favor and buy it as you don’t find many highly rated rums in the US for $20.
Dave - Ron Abuelo 7 Años is an incredible bargain. I’ve even heard of it selling in Panama for a dollar or two less than the price RnD paid. It’s a very satisfying rum, whether you buy it in Central America or here in the States. This seven year old rum from Ron Abuelo would make a nice “house rum”; fine for sipping neat or on the rocks, and for those who must mix, it would add nice complex rum flavors to a cocktail like a Fidel Castro, Mojito, or Cuban Sidecar.
