Abuelo Añejo

Objective Notes

Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

When pouring Ron Abuelo Añejo rum into a glass you discover a light golden amber rum, almost straw colored. The aromas are pleasant if not overly numerous or complex.  Pronounced honey of cane, oak and buttery vanilla are immediately apparent, with a moderate, simple sweetness and subtle spiciness (subdued cinnamon) and an appropriate trace of alcohol. Initial tasting reveals a light bodied rum and delicate flavors of vanilla, citrus zest, and hints of white pepper. The finish is relatively quick, slightly spicy, and mouth warming spice that lingers nicely.

Anecdotal Notes

Roger:  I discovered Ron Abuelo Añejo rum while on a sailing trip to the San Blas Islands off of the east coast of Panama in September 2007. Along with 7 other rums from Central and South America Abuelo Añejo was featured in a rum tasting event I hosted on a tall ship with 40 new friends. It compared very favorably against several rums of similar age.   This molasses based rum is pot distilled in Panama, and aged in white oak barrels. It’s presented in a traditional, brown, round bottle with a parchment style label and a raised crest on the shoulder, topped by a plastic screw cap.

Tasters Opinion

Roger - Abuelo Añejo rum could be compared to rums that are much older in “age”. It really is a very versatile rum and can truly be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a rum based cocktail. For the price you’d have a hard time finding less expensive rum for the quality in the USA. If you can find it give it a try as you won’t be disappointed!

Dave - Abuelo Añejo is pleasant enough to enjoy anytime, neat, on the rocks, or even in a cocktail that requires some sweetening with a touch of oak and cane flavor.  Without guile or pretense, Abuelo Añejo doesn’t demand critical sipping or anything other than that you enjoy it.  While not the most sophisticated  nor complex rum in my locker, it’s one I reach for again and again.
