Admiral Rodney Extra Old St Lucia Rum
Admiral Rodney Extra Old St Lucia Rum
Objective notes:
Very Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)
Admiral Rodney is a deep amber colored rum resulting from its time maturing in Bourbon Oak. This also contributes to the aromas of brown sugar and lightly toasted oak. Slightly sweet, nearly tart and a bit earthly on the nose, almost like raspberry or black cherry with a hint of almond and vanilla. Flavors of very light brown sugar, caramel and alcohol reveal themselves cleanly, with warmth in the mouth and leaving with a nice long semi-sweet, off-dry finish. Ultimately, Admiral strikes a nice balance between dry and sweet.
Anecdotal notes:
Admiral Rodney Extra Old St. Lucia Rum comes in a very handsome, square, squat decanter with a substantial cherry wood stained cork closure. The label is illustrated with a picture of Admiral Rodney, a famous British Naval Admiral stationed on St. Lucia, and the famous naval engagement known as The Battle of Saints. On April 12, 1782, Rodney was victorious in routing the French fleet and saving the island. The rum is packaged in a box that has historical information and stories on three sides.
For years we've wanted to obtain a bottle of this rum, and were unable to locate it in the USA. During RnD’s sail through the Windward Islands in February 2007 we were fortunate to try some at the Pink Snail Bar at Marigot Bay, Saint Lucia and later purchased a bottle in Castries.
Taster’s opinion:
RnD - Admiral Rodney is meant for sipping neat, and may be most appreciated in cooler winter months, relaxing by a fireplace. Adding a little water or trying it on the rocks is an option for some. Admiral Rodney Extra Old is a clean tasting and classic aged rum with very nice packaging. It is a bit costly compared to similar rums found in the Caribbean, though this is a good bottle to add to your collection if you find yourself on holiday on St. Lucia, since it is difficult to find off the island. For a real bargain, try its younger and less expensive sibling, Chairman's Reserve.
