Angostura 1919
Angostura 1919
Objective Notes
Extemely Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)
Perfectly balanced big flavors, rich beyond it's eight years age, golden amber colored rum. Powerfully seductive aromas of vanilla and sweet molasses embrace the nose. Dive in, and you instantly realize the scents were only a rehearsal for the even deeper taste, which is more flavorful and pronounced. Creamy vanilla, caramel, brown maple sugar, virtually no smoke or spice, all wrapped up inside a full, round cozy body. Finish is like pure caramel sauce drooling down the throat. If that's the kind of rum you prefer, it doesn't it get any better than 1919. Sip neat at room temperature - don't waste the ice.
Anecdotal Notes
Oh yes, this is my kinda rum. Distinctive low square numbered bottle with rounded shoulders and a big cork lets you know there's a genie inside just waiting to get out and fulfill your every wish. Hard to find in the US; thanks for the excuse to go back to the Caribbean so I can stock up.
Taster’s Opinion
Dave - 1919 isn't even Angostura's most expensive rum, but it is one of the best. There are so many wonderful and different rums available today for those who seek them, that it would be an ignorant shame to settle on just one brand. But If I had to be lost at sea on a sailboat for months or stranded on a Caribbean island, or even snowed in for a week in the mountains, 1919 alone would get me though and I'd still want more after I was rescued. It's that rewarding every time.
I would only drink this rum neat, never even consider mixing it with anything, but I can imagine it would add tremendous body and flavor to anything you paired it with. Definitely one to pour if you are introducing guests to the adventures of rum. It's eminently drinkable, approachable and delicious.
