Objective Notes
Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

Light amber colored with a classic rum taste. On the nose, sweet, slightly perfumed with just a tinge of vanilla, and alcohol is subdued. On the tongue, initial tastes of bitter candy with hints of spices topped by ginger and orange peel. A bit more oak and vanilla are also revealed. Mid-palate, a little hot with alcohol so try sipping in small measure to sense the delicate flavors of caramel, licorice, and orange marmalade. On aftertaste, I find some heat with lingering orange peel and anise.

Anecdotal Notes
Barbancourt rums are some of the more widely distributed and available rums from the Caribbean. The distiller has a reputation for consistency, with several rums on the market. Rhum Barbancourt 8 year old is best tasted defensively and with moderation because it can be overwhelming in large doses. Underneath its brusque exterior it is shy, not revealing its flavors unless you ask nicely and sip carefully. The flavors are subtle, but rewarding. Can be sipped neat or over a little ice.

Taster’s Opinion
Dave - Barbancourt 8 year old is only moderately complex rum and needs to be delicately sipped in order to find all of its flavors. In larger sips the rum is a bit overwhelming, despite 8 years old and aging in barrels. The rum strikes a nice balance between oaky and smoky, but is hotter than many of the fine 8 year old barrel aged rums. I would include this in a tasting party if I was initiating people into the flavors of Caribbean island rums that are available here in the States. The Barbancourt 8 year old is a classic tasting, basic aged rum that doesn't impress with delicacy and high prices - a thin, worthy sipping rum.
