Barceló Gran Añejo

Objective Notes
Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

Ron Barceló Gran Añejo rum is visibly pleasing to the eye and is medium amber in color. Once poured into your glass you’ll notice aromas of light, sweet, with buttery vanilla. The initial taste is velvety smooth and true to the aroma with the addition of a little spicy fruit and possibly a tiny hint of oak. The body is light to medium, and leaving behind a nice, warm medium-long finish.

Presentation is attractive, if not overwhelming. Ron Barceló Gran Añejo rum is presented in a simple brown bottle with a simple but effective gold label. It’s finished off with a cork topper.

Anecdotal Notes
I was introduced to Ron Barceló Gran Añejo rum during a recent sailing trip in the Caribbean off the coast of Panama and Columbia South America. Onboard a tall ship, I hosted a rum tasting event for about 40 people. Barceló was one of the younger, middle-priced rums – one of the several rums from Central and South American we sampled that evening. It was tasted fifth out of eight rums, immediately following behind young Panamanian rum of similar age. It was well received by many during the tasting.

Taster’s Opinion
Roger - Ron Barceló Gran Añejo is a decent tasting, very reasonably priced rum. Because this rum is positioned between younger (or un-aged) rums and aged premium rums, it is somewhat difficult to categorize. It’s fine for cocktails or rum based drinks or can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks. This Barceló is almost too good or not good enough depending on your preference. I think I would tend to enjoy this more in a rum based drink. It's a bargain in the US for around $20, so try it in your favorite Mojito recipe.
