Botran Reserva

Objective Notes
Extremely Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

A deep copper color is ample prelude to fine aromas of oak, vanilla, caramel, toffee, fruity like apricot and dried cherries, then lesser notes of sweet potato, new leather and very mild cinnamon (with no off-alcohol odors). Tastes of sweet oak and caramel progress over your tongue and palate like a slow rolling sea, each wave of full-bodied rum bringing yet another colorful flavor.  The barrels that previously aged sherry and port show up nicely in the finish, contributing layers of sweet complexity, and a fig-like texture to the oak and vanilla.

Anecdotal Notes
Dave – Botran harvests its sugar cane from the family estate in southern Guatemala, presses it into virgin sugar cane honey, then ferments and distills it before resting the new spirit in the mountains at high altitude.  AT 2,330 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of 17° C and less oxygen at high altitude, the fresh air and relatively low temperature permit slow and intense aging. Botran Reserva is aged for 5-14 years, blended and further refined through a modified Solera process. Several types of barrels, including those previously containing American Whiskey, as well as re-charred American oak and Sherry barrels are employed, each contributing their unique characteristics to the rum.

Taster’s Opinion

Dave – Botran Reserva was unveiled to RnD and other fortunate VIP’s during Rum Renaissance Festival on May 7, 2010. Then, Botran’s spokesperson claimed his new rum is a “variant with a robust, yet accessible flavor profile … the

balance of oakiness and sweetness is what makes our rums unique” The Botran family has been producing rum for over half a century. Their exceptional Solera 1893 is impeccable, and provided the distillery with plenty of room below to offer another fine rum. With Reserva, Botran has delivered a superb rum at an everyday affordable price.  Bravo!

Roger – Botran Reserva is very good rum from a quality rum producing family and company. The fine cane honey, perfected distillation methods, and complex solera blending and aging process results in a nicely finished product. Full bodied, warm, and complex, you’ll find new aromas and flavors each time you raise the glass to imbibe. Priced well allowing it to be enjoyed every day but refined enough to share with your discerning friends who understand great rum.  Cheers!
