Cacique Antiguo

Objective Notes
Extremely Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

Deep amber in color from 10 years in oak barrels, this aged rum is a beauty in the glass. Wonderful soft aromas of vanilla, golden raisins, and light brown sugar highlight the clean nose. You are ready for your first sip and are rewarded with a medium body that’s slightly warm but pleasing and true to the aromas, with the addition of some oak or wood. A long, lingering warm finish preserves the memory of this rum in your mouth. And then you take your next sip.

Anecdotal Notes
While visiting the Tuscan town Cortona (Famous from the movie Under the Tuscan Sun) my wife and I were fortunate to discover “La Saletta” a great Enoteca, or wine bar, that featured high end wine and spirits along with great local cuisine. I wasn’t expecting to find the display window of this wine shop overflowing with the some of the best rums in the world. Of course we went in and had lunch and I tried several of the 30+ rums on their menu.

The bottle of Cacique Antiguo is a handsome, surprisingly heavy decanter, round in shape, and finished off with a silver cork topper. Each bottle is hand numbered on the back noting its limited production.

Taster’s Opinion
Roger - I’m a big fan of most Venezuelan rum. Cacique Antiguo is a rare and exceptional rum that you should add to your collection if you are fortunate enough find it. I’ve not seen it anywhere in the Caribbean or the US. It is best enjoyed neat or with a little water or ice.
