Cruzan Black Strap

Objective Notes
Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

Cruzan Black Strap Rum is a full-bodied, dark, almost black colored rum, as the name suggests. It has a strong aroma of sweet molasses. It begins smooth and ends with a little heat. It’s slightly viscous as it envelopes your mouth with the dominant molasses flavor. The distinctive flavor and extra dark color make this a unique rum. It’s said to be done in the British Navy tradition.

Anecdotal Notes
I decided to try Cruzan Black Strap Rum after attending a rum tasting at a local resort, where it was one of the featured brands. It was presented as new to Oregon and the distributor mentioned that Cruzan was aggressively pricing it to get the market. I thought it was OK from the small sip I tried. Since the bottle was about as reasonably priced as I can get, I bought one. Plus, I liked other Cruzan Rums.

Tasters Opinion
Roger - Cruzan Black Strap is a uniquely strong molasses flavored rum that is meant to be enjoyed neat or over ice. This isn’t a complex sipper; rather it is one dimensional, with the strongest flavor of molasses that I’ve ever tasted in a rum. This leads me to suspect the molasses flavor is added after distilling. It isn’t for everyone. But if you are even slightly interested I’d recommend buying a bottle as the price can’t be more reasonable. I’m not sure how this rum would taste in a cocktail but it might do well in a wintertime drink or maybe as a Mai Tai. Heck it might be good over waffles?
