Objective Notes
Very Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)
The crystal clear belies the sweet cane and moderately complex aromas of aging. Further sniffing reveals a slightly organic and grassy tone, buttery warmth, mild vanilla and oak, and pleasantly delicate alcohol. Initial tastes are classically simple: sweet, vanilla and mild oak, buttressed by a strong, medium-weight body, leading to a long finish, surprisingly deep for a white rum, and consistently sweet for the duration.
Anecdotal Notes
The Premium Aged White rum category is growing rapidly, adding quality and depth to the field. FdC’s Extra Dry 4 Year Old has been a staple of the category, and remains one of its best. FdC intends Extra Dry rum to be mixed in cocktails (, recommending fruit juices, cola, soda and tonic water). Calls it “light bodied, silky, dryish … with a long finish of dry sugar cane and frosty vanilla.” These could be elegantly simple as a rock and a squeeze of lime - very refreshing.
Taster’s Opinion
Flor de Caña Extra Dry 4 Year Old delivers exceptional value, comparing favorably with other premium aged white rums costing more than twice as much. It’s a very nicely balanced rum, moderately sweet and flavorful, equally adept at sipping as well as mixing in cocktails. The color may be transparent, but the quality is clear. For your first sip, close your eyes then imbibe, and you’ll swear you’re holding a deeply aged beauty. Flor de Caña Extra Dry 4 Year Old redefines the experience that an inexpensive aged white rum delivers.
