Flor de Caña Grand Reserve

Objective Notes
Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

A visually pleasing blend of copper and mahogany color, exactly what you would expect from a 7 year old rum aged in white oak barrels. A faint hint of brown sugar is found after you get by the light alcohol aromas that are leading. Initial taste reveals a full, slightly viscous body with flavors of buttery brown sugar, and pepper. Not complex but clean with no off favors. The finish is slightly dry, medium in length and starts warm and finishes spicy.

Anecdotal Notes
I purchased this bottle in Panama City, Panama this past summer while vacationing. It comes in a nice bottle with a black label with gold lettering clearly promoting the age with a big red 7 below the name. On the shoulder of the bottle is the distillery’s name embossed in glass, a nice touch considering the cost of the product. A black screw cap closure and built in pour limiter finish it off.

The San Antonio Sugar Mill in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua has been making fine rums for over a century. This rum is made from molasses and distilled in a 5 column still efficiently producing top grade alcohols. The rum is aged for 7 years in small (180L) white oak barrels used only one time prior, thus ensuring consistency. It’s blended and tested before bottling.

Taster’s Opinion
This is pleasant and clean tasting rum, best enjoyed neat or on the rocks. I’d recommend Flor de Caña Grand Reserve 7 year old rum if you prefer a clean and simple rum, but I would encourage you to try one of its older, smoother, and more complex siblings, the Centenario Gold 18 year old, or even better the Centenario 21 Commemorative Edition.
