Objective Notes

Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth).

Inner Circle Green Dot Rum displayed nice hues of copper and a medium dark amber color after being introduced to my double old fashioned glass. A rich bouquet of aromas rewards you as you move the glass under your nose. You discover the scents of anise, buttery toffee, brown sugar, and a healthy, but agreeable, whiff of alcohol which you would expect in overproof rum.

Your first sip confirms you are enjoying the upscale Green Dot rum (as opposed to Red) with a sizable warmth up front, leading to a full body, and flavors of cinnamon, anise, pepper, and cane juice. The finish is warm and long with bitter chocolate and slightly peppery flavors settling on your tongue unwilling to leave as it slowly dissipates and becomes a memory.

Anecdotal Notes

The history of Inner Circle is best described on their website http://www.innercirclerum.com/content.html#  but simply put; the operation began over a hundred years ago as a sugar producing company that distilled exceptional rum in very limited quantities for the company’s select elite and special business partners.  These privileged few were members of the “Inner Circle”. Eventually, the company marketed and sold the product up until 1986, when sales were discontinued. In 2002, Stuart Gilbert, the Australian Olympic Yachtsman and long time fan of the rum, sought out Malcolm Campbell, who had been responsible for distillation at Inner Circle from 1972 to 1986. Stuart was able to persuade Malcolm to apply his years of experience to once again produce Inner Circle.

Carefully pot distilled in small batches and aged in small oak barrels, Inner Circle Greet Dot overproof rum is presented in a tall rounded traditional bottle with a black label (including a green dot), black foil label covering the neck, and a black metal screw cap with green top.

Taster’s Opinion

Inner Circle Green Dot Rum is an upscale overproof rum that achieves marks near the upper end of its class through excellent presentation, a smooth full body, and distinct flavors that aren’t overwhelmed by its high alcohol content. It is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks, and with a little water to open it up (mixing is really a waste in my opinion). If you are an overproof rum fan you owe it to yourself to acquire a bottle of this fine Aussie Spirit!
