Jack Iron
Jack Iron
Objective Notes
Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)
Strong yet smooth. The rum of fable and mystery. An over proof light, almost clear rum, made from a secret recipe, which includes ageing in oak casks, so that its amazingly gentle on the palate when enjoyed neat. Though not for the faint of heart! Strong alcohol scents with no other discernable scent. It wraps around your tongue like an electric blanket with and easy initial feeling on the mouth and then the heat reveals itself. A simple rum that's surprisingly smoother compared to other strong rums I’ve tasted.
Anecdotal Notes
Roger - I was first introduced to Jack Iron Rum on Carriacou in the capital town of Hillsborough. Many of the local bars and stores bottle their own version of it. It's reported to be distilled on Trinidad and Grenada. Carriacou is known for 100 rum shops and one gas station. I can tell you that isn't far from the truth. The locals are proud of their rum traditions and bottle their rum in what ever they can find. Mine came in a Johnny Walker Red Label bottle (see picture) but it's said in the past that it came in any bottle including a scope bottle with corks. Jack Iron is a legend in the southern Caribbean and is a bargain for its quality. The tall ships we sail on throughout the eastern and southern Caribbean carry a 50 gallon barrel of Jack Iron for their famous rum punches.
Taster’s Opinion
Roger I recommend Westerhal’s Jack Iron overproof rum for exotic rum punches or other mixers. It can be consumed neat though even the most serious rum fans will need to find courage to finish their glass. It is a great rum and excellent buy if you can get to Grenada or Carriacou to pick up a bottle. You aren't going to enjoy this rum every day but it's more fun than the everyday mega mass produced 151 proof bottle at your local liquor store.
