Millonario Reserva Especial

Objective Notes

Extremely Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth).

Pouring reveals a deep mahogany amber color.  Aromas of dried plums and candied stonefruit (fig, dates), clove, woody and oaken vanilla, sweet of molasses and brown sugar, are all delivered within a dense nose texture reminiscent of old style butter-and-lard pie crust.  Initial tasting reveals Millonario’s brawny side - it’s more full on the tongue than the aromas suggest, adding flavors of mildly nutty English toffee, caramel, cola, and some char.  Sweet for sure, but it’s delivered with a cocoa smokiness that adds depth and character.  The body is a real heavyweight, almost syrupy for a rum, whereas the substantial finish exits a bit lighter than the body, easing to a lingering toffee-flavor.

Anecdotal Notes

Dave – Millonario’s packaging is impressive to look at.  The coarse, hand woven strands of Toquilla straw from the Carludovica Palmata plant (the jute-like material woven into Panama hats) cover the entire bottle, including a cap and
carrying strap.  Those of you familiar with Ron Zacapa’s 23 year old rum packaging circa 2005 will recognize the style.  While Millonario’s natural bottle wrapper is executed in slightly different fibers than used by Zacapa, either bottle forms a collectible conversation piece while sipping, and the rum inside is certainly worthy of the unique wrapping.

Taster’s Opinion

Dave – Those of you looking for another full bodied, sweet light rum will truly appreciate Ron Millonario.  Produced in old Scottish three-column stills, matured and blended in a four-tier Solera system using casks made from American and Slavonian oak, the rum has a lot going for it.  Ron Millonario Reserva Especial packs smooth flavors inside it’s unique bottle.

Roger – Ron Millonario Solera 15 Reserva Especial is a nice rum with interesting aromas and flavors. I first tasted it the the 2011 Rum XP tasting competition at the Miami Rum Renaissance in which it took a silver medal. It is a sipper best enjoyed neat or on the rocks. Peru produces several fine rums and Ron Millionario Solera 15 Reserva Especial is no exception. Available in Europe, Japan, and the USA as well as online. A nice rum for any collection and priced for everyday enjoyment!
