Oronoco
Oronoco
Objective Notes
Very Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)
Oronoco has a pale shade of light straw; what you would expect knowing that it is a blend of triple distilled cachaça-style rum and aged Venezuelan rums. Aroma/Nose: Subtle notes of vanilla. Oronoco reminds me of vanilla saltwater taffy, with an impressively clean, soft nose and no off odors or alcohol aromas. Body: Medium with a slight viscosity. Flavors are very light and slightly sweet with just the smallest hint of vanilla. Neither too complex, nor hot from alcohol flavors, and very clean tasting which is what this rum is all about. Finish: Medium long which follows the body very well, with the smallest amount of warmth in the back of your mouth and throat. A very pleasant experience
Anecdotal Notes
Oronoco is marketed as a super-premium silver rum. It first appeared on the scene in 2005 and has won many awards since then. It does occupy a unique position in the market.
The rum is made with fresh cut Brazilian Mountain Cane grown on the slopes of the Paraiba do Sul river valley. It’s makers demonstrate their cachaça heritage in producing this fine hand crafted rum. Tripled distillation in pot and column stills is probably the reason why Oronoco is both flavorful and pure tasting at the same time. It is also blended with some Brazilian mountain water and Venezuelan Aged Rum, then married to allow the flavors to fully mature. A final light resting in Brazilian Amendam wood casks provides the finishing flavor.
Oronoco is presented in a unique, tall, thin clear bottle with a high-end plastic cap embossed with the sun on the top and Brazil on the side. It’s made to look like copper and silver. The bottle is wrapped with a recycled wide leather band that is embossed with a map of Brazil and a compass and a ship on the sides. The label is simple, elegant, and informative. Almost like a production label that you'd see on the outside of the shipping crate or boxes case. Overall, this is an unusual and classy bottle perfectly fitting a distinctive rum.
Taster’s Opinion
Roger - Oronoco is a great premium silver rum – one of the very best I’ve tasted. It really defines its own category since it’s almost too good to use in a mixer, though I’m sure it would make a wonderful cocktail especially where the main ingredient is rum. It also is very good neat or on the rocks, which isn’t typical of many white rums.
Oronoco probably won’t be your rum for everyday, but it is fun to bring out for special guests to show the wide range of rum styles and types available.
