Objective Notes

Very Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth).

Rhum J.M Gold developed its light amber color from the time it spent aging in new American oak barrels. On the nose, aromas of fresh cut cane with a hint of light sweet vanilla is discerned. As the rhum opens up some spiciness and mild alcohol is also noted. Initial taste delivers warmth up front with a spicy edginess and flavors of pepper, allspice, vanilla, and anise. Possessing a medium to light body it finishes long, dry, and warm with hints of unsweetened coco, with slight residual sweet cane flavor and a spice fade.

Anecdotal Notes

Roger - Rhum J.M is the smallest distiller on Martinique. It carries a certain mystique and is regarded with reverence amongst Martinique residents. The current owners are fifth generation heirs of the Crassous de Medeuil,  and remain in charge of production despite having been purchased by Rhum Clément over 6 years ago. The estate is situated uniquely on the island’s northeast side, at the overcast foot of Mt. Pelee. I came away from a visit to the area several years ago impressed by its lush vegetation due to the climate and rich volcanic soil.  J.M harvests their sugar cane later than other distilleries on the island resulting in a unique final product.  Per AOC regulations, only fresh pressed cane juice is fermented, then distilled in a two column copper still, producing a wonderful distillate while eliminating the volatile elements, resulting in a refined rhum agricole. From there it goes into stainless steel tanks for at least one month before approval by the AOC. The process involves an analysis by an independent laboratory and tasting by rhum experts. Only then does Rhum J.M  enter small new American oak casks for the aging process where it matures prior to bottling.

Taster’s Opinion

Roger – Rhum J.M is very good gold agricole rhum. Its not aged as long as J.M. VSOP but it still has a nice refined flavor and smoothness to it. I would enjoy it in a favorite cocktail or mixed drink. It could also be good on the rocks if you are a rhum agricole fan.  Before Clément bought Rhum J.M about 6 years ago it wasn’t readily available outside of Martinique or France. Now this wonderful brand is much more widely available. If you are looking for a great Gold Rhum Agricloe look no further. A worthy purchase for sure.

Dave - Rhums from the house of J.M and are perhaps not as well known in the USA as they deserve. I was unexpectedly surprised by J.M’s Gold Rhum - not because I had low expectations - quite the contrary.   I expected to find Rhum J.M Gold enjoyable, I just didn’t think it would be so smooth, so pleasantly aromatic and delicately flavorful.  Whether sipping, or using in a ‘Ti punch or proper Daiquiri, Rhum J.M Gold does it all with aplomb.
