Ron Huasteco Potosi

Objective Notes

Very Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

With the light amber color as a preamble, sniffing rewards your senses with surprisingly interesting aromas.  Attractive and underpowered scents of brown sugar, caramel syrup and creamy milk chocolate are the most prevalent, followed by muted sugar cane, then come nicely understated tones of fresh oak and vanilla, a hint of paraffin, with very little alcohol on the nose.  The initial taste is semi-sweet, drier and lighter than the aromas, with subtle honey flavor, and slightly floral.  The absence of any harsh alcohol flavors indicates a clean distillation process.  Potosi is a medium-light bodied rum reminiscent of a fine Puerto Rican style, while the finish is light, pleasant and politely brief.

Anecdotal Notes

Founded in 1938 and now one of Mexico’s older rum producers, Distilerias Huasteco lies in the fertile region of Huasteco where sugar cane grows in abundance.  While Ron Potosi is a popular local spirit, it’s not well known north of the Border, but the rum is attractively priced and flavorful.

Taster’s Opinion

Dave - If you are looking for an approachable aged rum that can be sipped, mixed, or introduced early on to a tasting party, try Potosi.  Being unpretentious and inexpensive, Ron Huasteco Potosi needs no apologies, and its subtle aged character is easy on the palate.
