Rubi Rey

Objective Notes

Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

Rubi Rey rum is perfectly clear in color.  Pleasant and simple aromas of fresh cut cane, and light alcohol are noted. Tasting Rubi Rey reveals a peppery introduction up front and a light body. Light flavors of buttery vanilla, oak, and mild cut cane are discovered. The finish is warm, medium-dry, and quick with a slight oak fade.

Anecdotal Notes

My introduction to Rubi Rey Reserve rum was at the Ministry of Rum Tasting Completion 2007 in New Orleans.  It received a Silver Medal in the competition that year and again in 2008.

Rubi Rey Reserve rum is distilled from molasses at the Bacardi Distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico and aged 2-3 years in white oak barrels in Northern Puerto Rico. It’s slow filtered to ensure all traces of color are removed from aging before finishing off in a single barrel to marry the flavors together. It’s uniquely presented in a tall red translucent hexagon shaped bottle with a while logo of a ruby above the name. A large plastic chrome screw cap tops of the bottle.

Taster’s Opinion

Roger - Rubi Rey is a very reasonably priced, good quality rum, best enjoyed in cocktails especially where you want to showcase the flavor of the rum. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks as it basically is gold rum with the color removed. It makes a superb Mojito. If you can find this rum in your local rum shop I’d recommend picking up a bottle.
