Ruins Rock Café KaKo Spiced Rum
Ruins Rock Café KaKo Spiced Rum
Objective Notes
Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)
Dark amber bests describes the color of KaKo Spice Rum. The nose reveals no surprises as you get what you expect, the strong, but not overpowering, aroma of cocoa, like a chocolate liqueur. Your first taste reveals a medium-bodied, slightly viscous rum of mild complexity and flavors of cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, raisins, and alcohol. A short finish begins as mellow and smooth, followed by a very little warmth and aftertaste of a fine chocolate.
Anecdotal Notes
I came across this rum while walking around Roseau, the capital of Dominica, looking for spices, vanilla beans and of course, rum. Near the city market is the Caribbean Magic Spice Shop and Ruins Bar and Cafe, which offers an abundance of fresh spices and herbs. More importantly, it offers over 30 spiced, flavored, and herbal rums: a great find for sure! I tried many of the spiced and herbal rums and purchased a few along with spices.
The bottle is a simple clear glass ~375ML bottle with green plastic screwcap, and a simple but colorful hand written label. Just imagine yourself choosing from a wall full of equally mysterious rums. One thing you can expect in any local rum shop where they make spiced rum is fresh whole spices and herbs in the bottle. This bottle contains 5 cocoa beans, a single vanilla bean, and the special Caribbean spice, bois bandé. The rum is most likely locally produced, then aged perhaps a year in oak, and (I suspect) a little sugar or cane juice is added to sweeten and mellow it the finished rum.
Taster’s Opinion
Roger - This is a fun and unusual spiced rum – the type that you’ll only find in a local Caribbean rum shop. It’s mean to be enjoyed however you are inclined. It makes a fine addition to a mixed drink calling for a chocolate liquor or neat. Perhaps after dinner for desert.
