Objective Notes

Smooth (on the RnD scale of Harsh-Smooth-Very Smooth-Extremely Smooth)

Tortuga Spiced Rum is golden straw in color mostly from the caramel coloring added and not from time in barrels. Surprisingly absent on the nose is a distinct spice aroma. Instead subdued aromas of caramelized sugar and alcohol are revealed. First taste brings a nice smooth warming sensation to the mouth and a medium body. Unassuming flavors of allspice, cinnamon, and sugar lead to a moderately dry and swift finish.

Anecdotal Notes

When I was last in the Cayman Islands I tried some of the Tortuga Rums. Of course I brought home some of the spiced rum cakes that are tasty and widely available but not the rum (which wasn’t).  I had to wait to this past year when it was introduced into the USA. Tortuga Rums are special blends of Jamaican and Barbados rums bottled in Jamaica and produced in the Cayman Islands. It is imported by the Majestic Distilling Company in Maryland. The bottle is tall round and sports the gold Tortuga label that is used on all of its products. It has a gold metal screw cap for a closure device.

Tasters Opinion

Roger - Tortuga Spiced Rum is a pleasant but subdued. If you are looking for nice spiced rum that is fairly smooth, not overpowering, and not full of strong flavoring or spices this is one to try. You can certainly enjoy it neat but its better in a cocktail that calls for spiced rum. It worked very well to make a rum and diet coke. It’s more widely available now in US.
